The relationship between movies and dreams has always been — to borrow a term from psychoanalysis — overdetermined. From its first flickerings around the time Freud was working on “The Interpretation of Dreams,” cinema seemed to replicate the uncanny, image-making power of the mind, much as still photography had in the decades before. And over the course of the 20th century, cinema provided a vast, perpetually replenishing reservoir of raw material for the fantasies of millions of people. Freud believed that dreams were compounded out of the primal matter of the unconscious and the prosaic events of daily life. If he were writing now, he would have to acknowledge that they are also, for many of us, made out of movies….more.

The release of Inception has triggered a lot of talk – most of it no doubt emanating from the Warner Bros marketing department – that Christopher Nolan has some claim to be considered in the same league as Stanley Kubrick, a cinema legend of unarguable status. Inception is Nolan’s seventh film of a career that includes two Batman movies as well as the widely admired Memento, while Kubrick managed to complete 12 feature films (plus the 72-minute Fear and Loathing, which he suppressed shortly after its release in 1953). El proyecto más inesperado del año en el mundo del cine ha convulsionado el festival de Berlín. Los tres nombres implicados: Lars von Trier; Martin Scorsese y Robert de Niro. El título del filme: Taxi driver, en versión año 2011.

Según la revista danesa de cine Ekko, Martin Scorsese planea una nueva versión de su Taxi driver, dirigida por el genio danés Lars von Trier, y que contaría con el actor Robert de Niro, de 66 años, nuevamente en el papel del legendario taxista neoyorquino Travis Bickle. Ekko asegura en su información que los dos directores hablaron sobre el proyecto en una reunión este fin de semana en Berlín, donde Scorsese presentó Shutter Island, su último filme. El socio de Von Trier en la productora Zentropa, Peter Aalbæk, rechazó “confirmar o negar” las informaciones. Pronto, dijo, se emitirá un comunicado oficial. Y ése es un dato a tener en cuenta si la cita es cierta, porque Aalbæk es el cerebro en la sombra de Zentropa, la productora de Von Trier y una de las empresas cinematográficas más potentes de Europa. Von Trier y Aalbæk son uña y carne en la empresa, y amigos íntimos.

American film director Tim Burton is to be Jury President for the 63rd Festival de Cannes, which takes place from May 12th to 23rd 2010.

Upon accepting the invitation from Gilles Jacob and Thierry Frémaux, Tim Burton declared: “After spending my early life watching triple features and 48-hour horror movie marathons, I’m finally ready for this.  It’s a great honour and I look forward, with my fellow jurors, to watching some great films from around the world.  When you think of Cannes you think of world cinema.  And as films have always been like dreams to me, this is a dream come true.”

American director Timothy Walter Burton was born August 25th 1958 in California. From childhood he developed a passion for drawing and Gothic films, and studied at the California Institute of the Arts before joining the Disney studios animation team. His own work, highly original even then, was very different from the style of cartoons made by Disney, but the studio recognized his talent and helped with the production of his first short films: Vincent (1982), Hansel and Gretel (1983) and Frankenweenie (1984).
